RAW SILK: Introducing London’s Disco Queens
RAW SILK AKA Grace George and Steph Smith are bringing disco boogying back in to London’s music scene. You can catch the self-proclaimed Silky Sisters having the time of their lives DJing in some of London’s best bars, clubs and pubs. They’ve already shared the D-Floor with Horsemeat Disco, Krywald and Farrer and Nick the Record and have hosted their own shows on Hoxton FM and Netil Radio.
RAW SILK are going places this year, so we thought we’d ask them some questions about that. Why not listen to their Soundcloud while you read hmm?
How did you two meet and how did RAW SILK begin?
We met in Melbourne on a blind friend date through mutual friends!
We ended up having so much fun partying in Melbourne that we wanted to create a similar vibe in London and so we began RAW SILK as a small intimate party for our mates. It was also a chance for us to play our records out.
How have you been received so far?
Our friends seem to like it a lot! We think that although it shouldn’t be – the novelty of seeing 2 gals behind the decks is always received quite well.
What are the biggest challenges to succeeding as a DJ duo in the UK?
Not sure we’ve succeeded yet. We’re just having fun with it. (We’ll let you know in a couple of years ????)
What are your ambitions for RAW SILK?
To make the whole world dance!
What moment has stood out for you since RAW SILK started?
The moment we realised that there was a whole crowd of people dancing at the front for our entire set that we didn’t know! (of course, we still love the support of our friends who are always front left!)
Is there a story behind your name?
Yes – we both owned the vinyl ‘Do it to the music’ a one hit wonder by an 80’s band called Raw Silk and thought that the name was quite fitting.
What shows/projects/events have you got coming up?
Our monthly soiree in Peckham will go ahead as usual. The venue changes every month but the next show is at The Four Quarters on March 31st.
We have our first RAW SILK party at hangar with guest DJ anu headlining.
We are warming up for Dan Shake and Prosumer in April at Hangar and we plan to be on a few festival stages – Gala, Neverworld, Gottwood, Love International…
Catch RAW SILK playing their funky stuff at Hangar in London Fields on March 2nd – early bird tickets available for £5 on Resident Advisor.
